This is the only ESE module that CE students have to take. As such, students may find its format and execution to be quite different from CE modules. Although the equations are comparatively simple, the questions require additional thought and attention to detail. For example, when the question asks to design a filter system for all operating conditions, you have to consider what happens if a filter unit is under repair or damaged. There is also an essay question in final exam that requires further thinking in the concepts.
In terms of teaching, the professor for the second part, Prof Hu Jiangyong is more clear and comprehensive in her explanations, but the slides are messy and hard to follow. The lecturer for the first half, Prof Ong Say Leong trys to challenge students to think further but does not explain the implications of the concept clearly. TAs are generally helpful and knowledgeable but the marking of assignments are not very consistent.
Lab coat and goggles are mandatory for lab. The group project is not difficult but i noticed that highest marks goes to groups which design the town alongside the sewer system and provide microstation drawings of pipe alignment in the town. Also, it is good for you to recap stoichometry and redox reactions from A level chemistry.
In summary, ESE3001 is a moderately intense module that is quite different from the other core modules. It provides a good break from the calculation intensive core modules and challenges students to think beyond the classroom and consider real operation parameters.
