Review #1

  • This module is split into two portions: hydrology and hydraulics. Sounds rather similar, but they both entails a very different aspect of water studies. Hydrology describes more of rainfall patterns and water flows (rather similar to physical geography) while hydraulics focuses more on the physics of water flow in close and open channels. Hydrology is taught by Prof Liong and Hydraulics is taught by Prof Pat Yeh. Both professors are very passionate and driven in the subjects they specialize and lecture in. Hence, they will always answer your questions very comprehensively ensuring that you internalize their teachings. 😊

Difficulty: 4/5

  • As this module has a large breadth, the skills requires is also largely varied, from good calculation and mapping skills to strong physics background in understanding hydraulic concepts. Rather tough but really manageable if you are very conscientious in keeping up with lectures, doing your assignments and completing your past year papers.

Interest: 3/5

  • This module can get rather dry, so be prepared to munch on your snacks and “dabaoed lunch” during lectures. However, assignments could be done in groups, so remember to book your friends in advance, and have fun completing assignments together.                                                                             -Dale Lee Zhen Wei (Year 3)

What did you enjoy most in this module?
This module was thought by Prof Vladan and Prof Pat Yeh. Prof Vladan is a good lecturer, he’s patient, funny and a really chill guy. He understands that the module is a bit cramped, and will let you know what is covered for finals. Do visit his office for consults, very useful.

What did you NOT enjoy in this module?
This module is too cramped with content that both profs struggle to cover all the chapters.
The Hydrology part of the lecture was taught by Prof Pat Yeh. He is one of the most incapable lecturers I’ve come across. Thankfully he has left NUS so I wouldn’t elaborate too much about him (however if he makes a return, I would advise u to push this module to SEP or Y4).

Any project work involved? If yes, describe what it involved.
There was no project work involved. We had a lot of quizzes and take home assignments.

Any advice or things that we should take note of?
The difficulty of the final paper and course is heavily dependent on which profs are teaching. Therefore, past year papers might not be too useful if it’s not taught by your prof.
For the quizzes, try to find past quiz qns as many of it are repeated from past quizzes or assignments. The quizzes are usually open boon, so u can print out the solutions.
Make sure you get a calculator that can solve for equations with one unknown. It’s allowed for exams and will save your life.

What did you find most challenging in this module?
The professor’s slide was full of pictures and almost no words. This made it challenging as we had to truly understand the topic in order to catch up
